Workers of the Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra have registered their displeasure against management’s bad treatment meted out to them. The workers staged the registration of this disapproval dubbed respect our rights at the hotel premises yesterday.
The 350 permanent workers and 120 casual workers were seen in armed bands and chanting songs. Chairman of the workers union Charles Obuobisa told TV Africa news that they have to reclaim their rights and dignity. He stated they have not been paid theager yearly bonus due them but management claims they did not meet the set target even though the workers were not told what the target for the year was.
Some of the workers compared their salary structure to new hotels which has a vast difference. With Golden Tulip classified as one of the best hotels in Ghana, there is so much demand from them at home but this is not met. An International Lawyer Doctor David Makongo who is also a guest of the hotel mediated and called on the management of the hotel to improve communication within the hotel.
A politician Charles Kofi Wayo also witnessed the event and called on the minister of youth and employment to come to the aid of the workers as well as other organizations to salvage the image of the Ghanaian worker.
The Vice President West Africa of the Hotel Herbert Friese said the management will resolve the issue and pay the bonus due them.
